Growing up, my dad always emphasized that breakfast was the key meal of the day. While we had our fair share of snacks and sweets, those were definitely not on the breakfast menu. However, he couldn’t resist a warm oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.
Had Jennifer Garner’s Pretend Cooking Show been around during my childhood, I’m sure her “breakfast cookies” would have been a game changer, possibly even making them a legit breakfast option for us.

Why Jennifer Garner’s Breakfast Cookies Are Amazing
It’s rare for me to find a cookie recipe I don’t adore, especially when it’s a loaded “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” kind. Garner’s breakfast cookies are a perfect example, filled with nutritious ingredients that offer a delightful mix of flavors and textures.
The usual ingredients like oats and chocolate chips are there, but Jen also includes exciting additions like coconut and crushed shredded wheat—yes, the cereal kind.
Shredded wheat not only elevates the fiber, iron, and protein content, but it also adds a wonderful crunch. I’m even considering using it in other favorite cookie recipes because it’s just that impactful.
What’s more, there’s no need to chill the dough before baking. Just mix as directed, scoop onto a baking sheet, and straight into the oven they go. Any cookie that’s ready in under 30 minutes is a must-try in my book.

Crafting Jennifer Garner’s Breakfast Cookies
The process for making these cookies is straightforward but includes some unique steps.
Start by mixing all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Then, stir in the standout ingredients—oats, coconut, crushed shredded wheat, whole wheat flour, and a pinch of nutmeg.
For the shredded wheat, I pulsed it in a mini food processor, though you can also crush it in a plastic bag with a rolling pin for a quick alternative.

In another bowl, mix brown and superfine sugars with lemon zest and vanilla. To intensify the flavor, rub the zest and vanilla into the sugars with your fingertips. This technique ensures the flavors meld perfectly within the dough.
Next, whip the sugar mixture with butter until light and fluffy. Blend in the eggs, then gradually incorporate the flour mixture. Be careful not to overmix—stop when you see no more dry spots.
If you’re a chocolate lover, now’s the time to fold in the chocolate chips. I used a cup of dark chocolate chips, and it was just right.

The Flavor Profile of Breakfast Cookies
These cookies are a dream come true, featuring crisp edges and soft, chewy centers enriched with layers of flavor from the vanilla, lemon zest, and nutmeg—a true delight.
While Garner enjoys her cookies with a hot toddy, I paired mine with a creamy latte. It’s hard to imagine a better way to kick off the morning.
