I’m not looking to start a debate here. There are those who can’t get enough chocolate in their chocolate chip cookies. But if you’re someone like me, who finds too many chocolate chips overwhelming, this is for you.
Personally, I prefer just three, maybe four chocolate chips in my cookies. This isn’t a widely shared sentiment, and I often end up picking out many of the chips from my cookies.
Realizing I had to tackle this issue right from the base—the dough—it was time for some kitchen experiments.
A Perfect Solution for Chip Overload
Initially, I tried using just half the chocolate chips the recipe suggested. This reduced the amount of chocolate but left the chip distribution quite random.
Then, I recalled a method used for blueberry pancakes where the berries are added after the batter is poured into the pan, allowing for precise placement. I figured the same could work for cookies.
No longer just mixing the chocolate chips into the batter, I now press three chips into each individual ball of cookie dough.
Ensuring Even Chocolate Chip Distribution
Admittedly, how cookies spread during baking and where the chips end up can still be somewhat unpredictable. However, I’ve adopted a few techniques that seem to help.
After mixing up a chip-free dough, I shape the dough into small, slightly flattened discs using the bottom of a glass. Then, I embed three chips into each, and chill the dough for at least an hour.
This process of forming and flattening helps the cookies to spread more uniformly. This way, no matter where the chips end up, I can strategically bite into the cookie to get a piece of chocolate in each mouthful, avoiding the need to pick them out later.
If you’re someone who enjoys the cookie dough more than the chocolate chips, you might want to try this method!
