Glen Powell Recalls Filming ‘Chad Powers’ With Real NFL Alums “Sprinting At Me With Everything They Got”

Glen Powell truly stepped into the shoes of a college football icon for his role in Hulu’s Chad Powers.

During the premiere event on Thursday, which was covered by Deadline, the actor who has been nominated for a Golden Globe shared his extraordinary experiences of working alongside actual ex-NFL athletes in the comedy series he developed with Michael Waldron.

“At the actual game, the experience was totally immersive,” he shared from the event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. “We had real former NFL players on the field with us, all geared up. Imagine facing off guys who are 6’7 and weigh 350 pounds, charging at you full speed.”

Powell added, “It was much like Chad Powers where the character Russ Holliday gets a second shot at playing on the field, and these guys got to suit up and join me there. You could see the excitement in their eyes, it was a heartwarming moment for everyone.”

He also mentioned how executive producers Eli and Peyton Manning helped connect him with Nic Shimonek, who coaches Patrick Mahomes, and Pat O’Hara, the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.

In Chad Powers, premiering with its first two episodes on September 30 on Hulu, Powell portrays the talented quarterback Russ Holliday, who assumes the alias of the titular character to join a new team after his own college career goes downhill.

The pilot, co-authored by Powell and Waldron, is inspired by a sketch originally produced by NFL Films and Omaha Productions that was broadcast on ESPN+ as part of the Eli’s Places series.
