Like many, I tend to be quite untidy while cooking. I recall during my days in professional kitchens, I often secretly changed my apron halfway through my shift because it was already covered in stains just a few hours in. At home, though, I’m less concerned about sauce spills or splatters on my apron, clothes, and kitchen towels since it’s my personal space.
One day, however, I realized that every single one of my kitchen towels was sprinkled with stains in various sizes and hues, not to mention my two favorite aprons and several cloth napkins.
Wanting to avoid purchasing new kitchen linens and hoping to restore my existing ones, I sought advice from Scott Schrader, a cleaning expert and Chief Marketing Officer at CottageCare, which operates over 41 locations across the country. He recommended a product he swears by for maintaining a clean, stain-free kitchen.
Simply Recipes / Oxi Clean
Premier Stain Remover for the Kitchen
“OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover is the ultimate stain remover for kitchen messes,” Schrader claims. He elaborates on its effectiveness, particularly for kitchen linens: “OxiClean is ideal for kitchen stains as it specifically targets tough organic stains like grease, tomato sauce, wine, and coffee, which are common in kitchens. It’s effective on cotton and most other washable fabrics used in kitchen linens.”
Schrader appreciates its accessibility too, noting that in a pinch, it’s easy to find at various retailers, both specialty and general stores, as well as online.
So, how does it work? The formula uses a combination of enzymes, solvents, polymers, and mannanase to break down and lift food particles, dissolve grease, and trap dirt, effectively removing the residue from the fabric.
According to Schrader, following the directions on the bottle usually suffices, but he often finds it beneficial to pre-treat stains by applying the remover directly to the stain and letting it sit for 10-15 minutes before washing. This extended contact time helps tackle more stubborn stains.
For especially tough grease stains, Schrader suggests adding a bit of liquid dish soap to the OxiClean pre-treatment to enhance its grease-emulsifying power. That’s something I plan to try next time I’m faced with a challenging grease or oil stain!
