I must admit, guacamole tops my list of favorite foods (with skinny margaritas not far behind). My signature party guacamole is a hit, loaded with ultra-fresh vegetables and tangy lime.
Searching for that perfectly ripe avocado at the grocery store has become a quest akin to finding Bigfoot in the wild. It feels like I’m trapped in a never-ending infomercial for avocados, lamenting, “Do you love avocados but find them always too hard or bruised? Do you despise storing them because you can’t eat a whole one at once? And how they’re perfectly ripe for only a moment!”

Review: Trader Joe’s Avocado Mash
- Price: $3.79 for an 8-ounce container
- Why I Love It: I adore guacamole but lack the patience for avocados to ripen. That’s why I opt for Trader Joe’s avocado mash, which boasts simple ingredients and a fresh taste.
The Appeal of Trader Joe’s Avocado Mash
Trader Joe’s Avocado Mash is a game changer. Crafted solely from Hass avocados grown in Mexico, lemon juice, and sea salt, it boasts a creamy, smooth texture with just the right touch of seasoning—not too salty or citrusy. An 8-ounce resealable tub costs less than $4, but honestly, I’d pay much more for the convenience of not having to prepare the avocados myself and being able to use as much or as little as I need. Plus, no waiting for avocados to ripen, and it’s cilantro-free.
Though it’s best if used within a day, it only starts to slightly brown in the fridge after 24 hours, which is quickly remedied with a stir—it’s unlikely you’ll have leftovers anyway. I use it in everything: blending into scrambled eggs, mixing into a salad for lunch, and even adding a creamy texture to berry smoothies since it lacks the extra spices found in guacamole. Dipping baby carrots directly into the mash is also a fail-safe snack.
For a quick and flavorful weekday dinner, try smoked pulled pork tacos with avocado mash. When you’re at Trader Joe’s, pick up some tortillas, pre-cooked Hardwood Smoked Pulled Pork, shredded cheese (Quattro Formaggi works well), crunchy chili onion sprinkle, and a tub of avocado mash.
To assemble, warm the pork and toast the tortillas on a griddle. Melt some cheese on the tortillas before topping them with the pork, avocado mash, and chili seasoning. Add a playful touch with cactus-shaped taco holders (a quirky gift that turned out to be surprisingly useful). Serve with a simple three-ingredient Trader Joe’s margarita, rimmed with chili lime salt for extra flair.
