As kids, my sister and I turned our kitchen into a lab for culinary experiments, especially those involving sweets. One quirky treat we devised was dubbed “zebra droppings”—don’t ask why, because I honestly have no idea. Odd name aside, these goodies were scrumptious and incredibly simple to make. You just scoop some peanut butter, cover it with melted chocolate, and freeze it until the chocolate sets.
Now in our 30s, my sister has turned her passion into a career as a baking influencer with a bestseller titled Sweet Tooth, and I develop elaborate recipes for a living. Still, one of my go-to snacks for a quick sugary fix is our simple zebra droppings.
This delightful combo of peanut butter and chocolate offers a crunchy exterior before giving way to a luscious, creamy center. It’s like crafting your own peanut butter cup without the fuss of molds—just use a spoon, and you’re good to go. These treats are excellent for a quick snack or a post-meal indulgence and are also a hit with children!

Essential Ingredients
While I’m a fan of natural peanut butter, it’s too runny for this recipe. A no-stir variety of peanut butter is crucial as it holds its shape on the spoon. You can opt for creamy or crunchy versions, or even use no-stir almond butter or a thick seed butter if you’re avoiding nuts.
For the chocolate, semisweet chips are my go-to because they’re always in my kitchen. However, you can easily substitute these with any chopped chocolate bar. Bittersweet, dark, or even white chocolate are all fine choices. If you’re using chips, mix in a bit of coconut oil to get the right melting consistency.
I like to finish these spoons with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt to enhance the flavors, but it’s optional. Other fun toppings include crushed nuts or bits of freeze-dried strawberries for a burst of flavor and texture.

Crafting 3-Ingredient Chocolate-Peanut Butter Spoons
Here’s what you’ll need for four servings:
- 2 tablespoons of semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil
- 4 tablespoons of no-stir creamy or crunchy peanut butter
- Optional flaky salt for topping
Start by lining a small plate with parchment paper or foil and set out four small metal spoons.
Combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second bursts in the microwave, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted.
Use a spoon to scoop about a tablespoon of peanut butter and place it on the prepared plate. Repeat with the remaining spoons.
Drizzle the melted chocolate over the peanut butter, ensuring it’s completely covered. Add a pinch of flaky salt if you like. Place in the freezer for about 10 minutes to set the chocolate.
Serve immediately or keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
