This summer, I committed to having my family over during the holiday season. I’m thrilled about it, but as the holidays approach, I realize just how big of a task I’ve taken on. To lighten the load, I’ve decided to get some “hosting insurance” by stocking up on frozen appetizers.

Drawing from my seven-year tenure in food journalism, where I’ve sampled a wide array of appetizers—both DIY and store-bought—I was confident in my ability to select some reliable standbys. (After all, who can predict when a cooking schedule might go awry, or a new recipe might flop?)

I sought to find treats that not only appealed broadly in terms of taste but also felt right for a festive occasion. I also needed something that could be easily stored in my limited freezer space. After trying several top-selling frozen appetizers from Costco, only one made the cut for regular use: the frozen puff pastry bites.

Why This Box is a Mainstay in My Freezer

The pastry puffs up beautifully, and the fillings are generous yet balanced. I’ve tried other puff pastry appetizers that either spilled their contents or were mostly pastry with minimal filling—neither issue occurs with these.

Besides the perfect texture and filling-to-pastry ratio, I was also impressed by their presentation. Serving a frozen appetizer that doesn’t look like a last-minute grab from the grocery store is crucial, and these look sophisticated yet are easy to handle and eat.

This find from Costco is a host’s dream. The box includes four flavors, catering to all tastes.

Each box includes a dozen of each variety: roasted red pepper and cheddar; spinach and Parmesan; artichoke, Monterey Jack, and jalapeño; and caramelized onion and ricotta. The flavors are packed in separate trays, making it simple to serve a few at a time while preserving the rest for later. (One minor issue: it’s hard to differentiate the flavors when they’re all frozen.)

The individual packaging also helps with storing them in the freezer. After baking the first batch, I removed the bulky box and stashed the slim trays into various small spaces in my freezer.

Enhancing Frozen Puff Pastry Bites for Serving

While these bites are perfectly fine as they are, adding a few garnishes before serving can enhance their visual appeal and add a burst of flavor. Consider topping them with a sprinkle of fresh herbs like chives, cilantro, or a rosemary sprig. A light drizzle of sauce or dressing can also elevate their taste.

For instance, a balsamic glaze might complement the spinach and Parmesan bites well, while a dab of high-quality honey could enhance the sweetness of the caramelized onion and ricotta bites.
