WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the 9-1-1 Season 9 episode titled ‘Secrets’
Actor Oliver Stark, known for his portrayal of the cheerful firefighter Buck in 9-1-1, has evolved alongside his character through nearly nine seasons.
In the latest episode ‘Secrets’, Stark discussed his character’s intriguing bisexual love triangle with a married couple he encounters on a night out, portrayed by real-life spouses Dean Geyer and Jillian Murray.
“It was somewhat uncomfortable,” he admitted. “The awkwardness didn’t hit until we filmed the romantic scenes, and I realized, ‘that’s your actual husband right there’ and ‘that’s your real wife.’ However, they were incredibly supportive, advising each other on how to pose or move, which was really helpful for me.”

Stark’s revelations come as Buck begins to question his carefree lifestyle, realizing that it might not be as rewarding as he once thought.
“He notices the stable relationships around him, like Hen and Karen, or his sister Maddie and Chimney. They all have their special someone who provides safety and understanding,” Stark explained. “This makes him reflect on his own life choices and realize he might be seeking a similar kind of security and companionship.”
Two seasons after Buck publicly embraced his bisexuality, Stark has felt the positive impact from the LGBTQ+ community and appreciates the way fans have embraced his character’s journey.
“Tim Minear, the show’s writer, recently expressed his support for the ‘Buddie’ ship, recognizing the chemistry between Buck and Eddie, played by Ryan Guzman,” Stark shared. “It’s fascinating to see the fan edits and sense the romantic tension that fans pick up on, and it’s something I’m open to exploring more in the series.”

Looking ahead, Stark delves into Buck’s emotional growth on 9-1-1, how the loss of Bobby has impacted him, and teases the upcoming 9-1-1: Nashville crossover event.
DEADLINE: Since Buck came out, how has the response from the LGBTQ+ community been?
OLIVER STARK: The reaction was incredibly positive, which was heartening. At first, I was unsure how it would be received given our diverse audience. But the show’s focus on inclusivity really resonated with viewers, making it a rewarding experience to represent such an important aspect of someone’s identity. I’m honored to continue this narrative.

DEADLINE: This week’s episode explores Buck’s bisexuality in a unique way. How does this experience influence his outlook on relationships?
STARK: It highlights that while a free-spirited lifestyle can be exciting, it may not always provide the deeper connection he seeks. Seeing stable relationships around him makes Buck yearn for a partner who truly understands and stands by him. This episode is pivotal in steering him towards seeking a meaningful relationship rather than fleeting encounters.
DEADLINE: Dean Geyer and Ryan Guzman share a resemblance. Was casting Geyer intended to hint at Buck’s type?
STARK: Not that I’m aware of. It’s a funny coincidence, though, as Dean and his wife were cast independently of their relationship. It’s intriguing how these things turn out, but it wasn’t planned.

DEADLINE: That’s an interesting tidbit. It must have been unique directing real-life spouses in such intimate scenes.
STARK: Definitely, the dynamic was unique but they were professionals. It’s one of those rare instances where life imitates art in the most unexpected ways.
DEADLINE: Fans have long supported a romance between Buck and Eddie. Do you think the writers might explore this?
STARK: It’s possible. Tim Minear seems open to the idea, and the chemistry is certainly there. It’s all about where the story needs to go, but I’m excited about the possibility and continuing to bring depth to Buck’s character.
DEADLINE: Aside from the romance, what was one of the more humorous or bizarre scenes you’ve filmed recently?
STARK: The show has had its share of wild scenarios. From quirky emergencies to massive disasters, each brings its own set of challenges and excitement. Personally, the emergencies that test our characters’ limits are the ones that resonate most, as they bring us closer as a team and family on set.

DEADLINE: How has Bobby’s death influenced Buck, considering Bobby was a mentor to him?
STARK: Bobby’s influence was profound, and his absence has deeply affected Buck. It’s an ongoing journey of grief and growth, pushing Buck to possibly step into a mentor role himself, reflecting on his own evolution on the show.
DEADLINE: Do you still keep in touch with Peter Krause?
STARK: Absolutely. Our cast has become like a family, and though we don’t talk daily, our bond remains strong. We recently reconnected over the holidays, and it’s always great to hear from him.

DEADLINE: What can you share about Buck’s future on the show?
STARK: Buck has matured significantly over the seasons, and I’m eager to explore his next chapter. Whether it’s dealing with new challenges or deepening his relationships, there’s always something new to discover about him.
DEADLINE: And what about the upcoming 9-1-1: Nashville crossover?
STARK: Buck and Eddie are set to appear in Nashville for an exciting episode. While I can’t divulge why we’re heading there, I can promise it’ll be an episode to remember.
