I don’t have any issues with drinking water—no need for taste enhancers or carbonation, just give me chilled plain water and I’ll meet my daily hydration goals.
Yet, there’s something about spa water that really gets me. Add some fruits or herbs to a pitcher of water, and I find myself consuming it by the liter. The subtle taste of natural fruits trumps the artificial taste of store-bought water enhancers by miles.
Working in social media, I often transform our recipe developers’ finest creations into engaging videos, leading to an abundance of unused produce in my kitchen—lemon halves, spare limes, sliced ginger, and basil leaves are common leftovers.
One particularly busy day filled with the creation of multiple fruit-laden videos, I was struck by inspiration. It wasn’t a novel idea, but at that moment, I felt a wave of domestic genius akin to Martha Stewart.

My Sustainable Twist on Chilled Water
I arranged slices of lemons, limes, and ginger on a tray and froze them. Once solid, I transferred them into a reusable silicone bag for storage in the freezer.
Throughout the month, whenever my water needed a boost, I’d grab a few frozen slices. Herbs, stored in their original plastic containers, also went into the freezer and didn’t clump together.
Create Your Own Flavor Combinations
Creating these frozen fruit and herb ice cubes takes minimal effort but allows for endless flavor possibilities. Combinations like ginger-lemon, lemon-lime, and lime-ginger not only enhance the water but keep it chilled. You can refill your glass multiple times before the flavor fades or the fruit becomes too bitter.
This summer, I’m eager to experiment with new combinations, like frozen watermelon chunks, strawberry slices in kombucha, or a sangria-style wine with assorted frozen fruits—and perhaps even some spicy frozen jalapeño slices, inspired by last year’s popular TikTok trend.
While it’s not a groundbreaking concept, if you find hydrating a chore or just want to add a fun twist to your beverages, consider making some room in your freezer for these delightful ice water enhancers.
