Obama Points Finger at Larry David for Tan Suit Fiasco in Series Finale

As Larry David’s journey through American comedic history wraps up, he humorously claims responsibility for a notable presidential controversy of recent years.

In the final episode of HBO’s sketch comedy series Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness on Friday, President Barack Obama made an unexpected guest appearance. The scene, set in 2014, features David suggesting Obama wear the infamous tan suit during his televised briefing on the military actions against ISIS.

After a light-hearted exchange about avoiding stains, David accidentally spills juice on Obama’s suit jacket. Upon Obama’s return, David persuades him to don the tan suit, which was originally destined for a NATO Summit in Turin, citing its suitability for the casual, outdoor setting of the event.

“Firstly, it’s an exquisite suit,” David exclaimed. “Plus, it’s casual Friday!”

“It is a great suit,” Obama agreed, with David confidently adding, “Oh boy, oh boy. This is the right choice… Trust me, you’ll be thanking me!”

As Obama tries on the suit, David gives his trademark approval, “Pretty good! Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.”

“Are you sure about this?” Obama queries, to which David responds, “I’ve never been surer about anything in my life. This is going to be talked about for ages.”

Obama’s appearance in the series finale coincides with David commemorating America’s Semiquincentennial in this seven-part sketch series that humorously retells significant American historical events.

Jeff Schaffer, a long-time collaborator with David on Curb Your Enthusiasm and an executive producer for Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, mentioned to Deadline that Obama, under his Higher Ground production company, proposed the idea to David as a unique way to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“When tackling a show about American history, you have to portray it warts and all. Currently, we’re dealing with a rather embarrassing wart that we hope will soon disappear,” Schaffer explained. “Having President Obama involved is beneficial because despite the country’s numerous blunders and slow learning curve, we continue to make progress. While Larry points out our regressions, the President reminds us of our potential to advance.”
