Why Is Trader Joe’s Korean Japchae Fried Rice So Appealing?
The idea of combining japchae with savory fried rice, as done by Trader Joe’s, is quite clever. It transforms what is typically a side dish into a more hearty meal (more details below). Although I’m typically wary of frozen rice dishes, I’ve had positive experiences with several selections from Trader Joe’s, like their risotto semplice and kimbap, which I keep in bulk in my deep freezer just in case they stop selling them. TJ’s Japchae Fried Rice is another product that I find myself stocking up on, much to the chagrin of my already packed freezer!
When it comes to frozen meals, my rule of thumb is to always opt for stove-top or oven preparation over microwave. True, microwaves are synonymous with convenience, but I find that taking a little extra time for stove-top cooking saves effort and enhances the dish’s overall quality.
To make the dish on the stove, simply heat two to three tablespoons of water in a skillet, add the contents of the bag, and stir-fry for about five minutes until fully warmed. (If you choose the microwave method, it only takes four and a half minutes to cook and one minute to rest.)

What I appreciate most about this dish is that it stands alone as a satisfying meal. However, for those who like to add a little extra, topping it with a fried egg, sautéed shrimp, or chunks of firm tofu can make the fried rice even more substantial, elevating it to a dinner-worthy delight.
I also enjoy pairing the fried rice with a variety of banchan, including different types of kimchi, pickled daikon and carrots, and seasoned bean sprouts. Experimenting with different combinations of banchan and japchae is part of the fun, as I search for the perfect bite.
