I have to confess something that might be a bit embarrassing—I sometimes find that my dishwasher has a foul odor. Ideally, it would always smell perfectly clean, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.
Frustrated with the intermittent stench, I decided to consult with experts at the appliance company Whirlpool. I was fortunate to connect with Mackenzie Reed, a Brand Management Analyst at Whirlpool’s Affresh Appliance Care, who provided some valuable insights on the issue.
What Causes Dishwashers to Smell Bad?
“There are mainly four reasons a dishwasher might start to smell,” Reed explains. First, the dishwasher may simply need a thorough cleaning. Neglect can lead to accumulation of food particles, detergent residues, and bacteria, which in turn decompose and produce odors.
Secondly, a clogged or damaged drain hose could be causing odors to backflow into the machine. Problems with your garbage disposal, especially if it’s linked to your dishwasher, can also contribute to this issue.
Third, mold or mildew can accumulate if the dishwasher isn’t maintained properly. Lastly, trapped food particles in soap scum can emit a potent, fishy smell. It’s definitely unpleasant.

Tips for Keeping Your Dishwasher Fresh
Consistent maintenance is Reed’s primary suggestion for keeping your dishwasher odor-free. She recommends a regular cleaning regimen using vinegar and baking soda, ensuring the drain is clear, and verifying that your garbage disposal functions properly.
Additionally, Reed advises to let the dishwasher door stay open after each cycle to air it out, thus preventing mold and mildew from forming.
However, if odors persist, Reed suggests using a specialized dishwasher cleaner like Affresh’s cleaning tablets monthly. These not only combat odors but also enhance the dishwasher’s performance.
Using these cleaning tablets is straightforward: simply place one in the machine’s bottom if washing with dishes, or in the detergent dispenser if running it empty. This should help keep your dishwasher looking and smelling like new.
For particularly stubborn residues or strong odors, Reed recommends using two tablets—one in the dispenser and one at the bottom of the machine. Regular use of these cleaning aids will maintain your dishwasher in optimal condition, odor-free and efficient. Now, I’m off to buy some dishwasher cleaning tablets myself.
