The Only Way to Store Pineapple, According to Del Monte

Handling a whole, fresh pineapple can sometimes feel a bit daunting. From choosing the right one at the store to figuring out how to properly core and slice it, and even how to store it at home—should it be refrigerated or is leaving it out on the counter okay?

Fortunately, the pineapple experts at Del Monte have all the answers you need for dealing with this quintessential summer fruit.

Proper Storage for Whole Pineapples

Ana Cristina Fonseca, Vice President of Product Management at Fresh Del Monte in North America, advises against refrigerating your pineapple. “It’s best to keep it on the counter in a cool, dark area,” she recommends. “Pineapples don’t need to ripen further once you buy them.”

Storing it in the refrigerator might cause it to soften, so maintaining it at room temperature and away from direct heat or sunlight is ideal.

Shelf Life of Whole Pineapples

Fonseca notes that since pineapples are harvested when ripe, it’s best to consume them soon after purchase. “A whole pineapple will remain good for about 3 to 5 days if stored correctly,” she explains, emphasizing that wrapping or enclosing the pineapple is unnecessary as its natural exterior provides sufficient protection.

After cutting a pineapple, however, it is fine to store the leftovers in the refrigerator. Keep them in an airtight container and they should last up to a week.

Selecting the Ideal Pineapple

“When shopping for a ripe pineapple, make sure it feels firm and sports vibrant, green leaves,” advises Fonseca. She suggests avoiding any pineapples that are overly soft or have brown, dried-out leaves.

She also mentions a popular TikTok trick that’s been making the rounds: gently pulling on the inner leaves at the top of the pineapple. If they come out easily, the pineapple is likely ripe.

Assessing its appearance and scent is crucial too. Look for a pineapple that’s symmetrical and feels heavy for its size. A good, ripe pineapple will emit a sweet, fruity aroma—perfect for that summertime grilled pineapple dish.
