The $2.29 Trader Joe's Find I Buy Every Time I Go

Trader Joe’s is well-known for its impressive selection of snacks. The dried fruits and nuts aisle is particularly remarkable, and their seasoned popcorn and rolled chili lime tortilla chips have become instant hits. Their gourmet dried apricots are a daily treat for me, ever since general manager Emma Christensen recommended them.

But there’s this one snack that has recently captured my attention—the one I can’t leave the store without: Trader Joe’s Sweet Plantain Chips.

I first picked up a bag on a whim during one of my trips to Trader Joe’s. I’ve always enjoyed their other plantain chips—Trader Joe’s offers several varieties—but these seemed particularly alluring. Plus, at only $2.29 a bag, it seemed like a no-brainer to give them a try.

That day marked a milestone in my snacking life. Now, I find myself unable to stop munching on them, and I’m more than willing to share this delightful problem with you.

Trader Joe’s Sweet Plantain Chips

  • Price: $2.29 for a 5.3-ounce bag
  • Why I Love It: They’re crispy, light, and not greasy—perfect for an anytime snack. I can easily polish off a bag on my own—it’s that addictive!

What Makes Trader Joe’s Sweet Plantain Chips So Great

They’re crispy and light, exactly how a perfect chip should be. They aren’t greasy or overly fragile; they strike the perfect balance. I adore how they’re sliced diagonally for extra long chips, which makes them fun to eat. They have just the right mix of sweetness and saltiness, akin to a well-made batch of kettle corn, with a delightful hint of plantain that I find irresistible. I often eat half the bag without even realizing it.

Besides snacking on them straight from the bag, I love pairing them with sandwiches and wraps. My husband is also a fan, though I’ve been known to hide a few bags to keep them all to myself.

Creative Ways to Enjoy TJ’s Sweet Plantain Chips

There’s truly no wrong way to enjoy these chips. Their elongated shape makes them perfect for dipping. Try them with a simple sauce from a tostones recipe, or a zesty green sauce made from blended cilantro, green onions, garlic, lime juice, and sour cream. They’re also fantastic with black bean dip or chipotle mayo. Place them out at your next gathering and they’ll be the first to go.

I also like using these sweet plantain chips as a salad topping. You can prop them up along the edge of your bowl for easy snacking or crumble them right on top. They go especially well with a Southwestern-style salad featuring spiced black beans, like a roasted sweet potato salad.

Regardless of how you choose to enjoy Trader Joe’s Sweet Plantain Chips, I recommend grabbing at least two bags—they’re irresistibly good!
