HARARE City Council says it is working on establishing safe underground and piped water following the recent typhoid outbreak in Glen View.
Thirteen new suspected cases that were reported in recent weeks by the City health department were reportedly handled before they could spread.
And the outbreak has been largely caused by the state of water and sanitation in the area as residents are failing to access safe water with sewage bursts having resulted in contamination of drinking water, including underground water.
“Typhoid and cholera have been our worst nightmare as people continue to source water from unprotected sources.

“Hence, we will assess the community’s underground water, sewer lines and piped water to see if the water is not contaminated.
“However, we are also urging people to denature water for domestic use by treating it with water guard before use,” said City health director Dr Prosper Chonzi.
Early last year, typhoid hit the suburb and claimed 49 lives, while over 10 000 people were treated and discharged with Tichakagarika being the hotspot for diarrhea diseases.
Typhoid is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated food, water or close contact.
It had almost become endemic in Harare’s Glen View and Budiriro suburbs forcing Government to introduce an anti-typhoid vaccine.
