EIGHTEEN people died while 73 were injured in 147 road traffic accidents during Christmas Holiday, police have confirmed.

Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi confirmed said the accidents occurred on the Christmas and Boxing Day and most were due to speeding.

“The number of recorded accidents were 147 as compared to 276 recorded at the same period in 2019.

“A number of accidents recorded were mainly due to speeding, reversing errors, driving without due care and following another vehicle closely,” he said.

Ass Comm Nyathi warned Kombi drivers operating with vehicles not registered under ZUPCO that police are impounding the vehicles and those failing to correctly wear facemasks will be fined or taken to court for prosecution.
