EXCLUSIVE: Utopai Studios, along with China’s Huace Film & TV, is embarking on a new venture to create a fully AI-generated animated series titled Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years.
Leveraging Utopai’s advanced AI technology, PAI, the series serves as the foundational narrative for a future cinema franchise. It draws inspiration from one of the most celebrated works in Chinese literature and mythology. The series sets out to explore previously untold stories, including the origins of Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King. This character is depicted as a defiant and immortal warrior, who, despite being confined beneath a mountain for five centuries, eventually becomes a guardian to a monk he had never previously encountered.
Under the partnership, Huace will handle the production of the series using the PAI system, while Utopai Studios will manage the distribution rights outside of China. The initial season is being developed for television, streaming services, and digital platforms, with ambitions to extend the narrative into movie theaters in the future.
This series is the first project to advance from Utopai and Huace’s strategic alliance, which was previously announced. In this partnership, Huace has adopted PAI as its preferred system for creating long-form entertainment content.

Journey to the West is not only a pivotal element of Chinese culture but also a significant mythological narrative globally, according to Cecilia Shen, Co-Founder and CEO of Utopai Studios. She remarks that this collaboration with Huace is an opportunity to craft a fresh and profound interpretation of the tale, starting with the emotional backstory of Sun Wukong and his future allies. Shen emphasizes that Utopai Studios was created to assist partners in leveraging renowned intellectual properties to develop expansive franchises and bring ambitious projects to fruition in ways previously unattainable.
Binxing Fu, CEO of Huace Group, added that Journey to the West has been a part of Chinese heritage for generations and merits a modern reintroduction that captures its essence with grandeur, emotional depth, and creativity. Through the partnership with Utopai Studios, they aim to transform this legendary story into an innovative AI-generated animated series, maintaining the cultural and emotional integrity that has allowed the story to resonate for hundreds of years. This alliance also aims to expand the narrative through both animated series and cinematic experiences for a global audience.
