POLICE yesterday arrested prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema who is under investigation for allegedly freeing notorious armed robber Musa Taj Abdul.
Kasema had gone into hiding after he was suspended by Prosecutor General Kumbirai Hodzi on Wednesday for consenting to the bail that also freed three other suspects.
However, Kasema reportedly surrendered himself to detectives at CID headquarters in the company of his lawyer.
The matter is being handled by the CID Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU).
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi, confirmed Kasema’s arrest.
“The ZRP can confirm that public prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema has been arrested and is now in police custody. He surrendered himself at the CID while in the company of his lawyer.
“The due processes of the law are now in motion,” he said.
A Chief law officer in the PG’s office, Justin Uladi, has also began the process to contest the High Court decision by Justice Benjamin Chikowero to grant Abdul and crew bail.
Uladi accused Kasema of failing to follow standard operating procedures.
“Our prosecutor erred by applying his own mind to file the consent order which is against our standard operating procedures,” he said.
He also said the judge should have applied his mind on the matter before relying fully on Kasema’s consent.
