Zimbabwe Journalist Chin’ono Arrested, Forced To Delete Twitter Account

Security apparatus in Zimbabwe has been cracking down on dissenting voices with impunity. In the early hours of today a group of plain-clothe operatives broke into the house of prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and dragged him to Harare Central Police Station. They have also arrested Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume.

The raids come as momentum builds towards planned July 31 mass demonstrations against the government. Chin’ono and Ngarivhume have been vocal on the need to force change withingovernment.

Chin’ono recently exposed the Presiden’t Mnangagwa’s family in one of the most blatantly corrupt deals involving covid-19 procurements. Mnangagwa’s son Collins through a company called Drax International run were involved in shadowy deals involving over US$60 million which has seen his associate Delish Nguwaya and fromer Minister of Health Obadiah Moyo being indicted.

Police have confirmed that both Chin’ono and Ngarivhume are detained at Harare Central Police Station. Chin’ono’s Twitter account has been deactivated and indications are that he has been forced to delete his account by detectives.

His cellphone is going unanswered. Lawyers have been deployed but as of 2pm Zimbabwe time, they had not been allowed access to them.
